The New Writers Tour is a reading series that introduces you to the emerging authors that people will be talking about in the future. Think Junot Díaz in 1996; Jhumpa Lahiri in 1999; Yiyun Li in 2005; Paul Harding in 2009; and Téa Obreat in 2011. A collaboration between the New Writers Project and BookPeople, Austin’s largest independent bookstore, this reading series will feature first-time authors reading at the store in the fall and spring. We hope to present the inspiring new writers who some of our students may soon be following.

October 17 at 7:30 p.m., Joynes Reading Room (Carothers Hall, on the UT campus)
Join us for the fall edition of the New Writers Tour with Eduardo C. Corral, the 2011 winner of both the Yale Series of Younger Poets and a Whiting Writers Award. He will be reading from his highly acclaimed poetry collection, Slow Lightning.
“Gay, Chicano, ‘Illegal-American,’ that’s all just language, and part of Corral’s point is that language, like sex, is fluid and dangerous and thrilling, now a cage, now a window out. In Corral’s refusal to think in reductive terms lies his great authority. His refusal to entirely trust authority wins my trust as a reader.”—Carl Phillips, from the Foreword of Slow Lightning
“[Corral] seamlessly blends English and Spanish in Slow Lightning.”—Craig Morgan Teicher, Publishers Weekly
“He mixes colloquial Spanish and English, and he packs many, many lines with sharp, sensual, specific imagery—this is Technicolor poetry. . . . Very engaging.”—Ray Olson, Booklist
“By any standard, Slow Lightning is an impressive debut, a gathering of powerful and often defiant poems that are paradoxically realized through formal control.”—Lambda Literary Review
